Thessaloniki

About 300 km from Sofia. The second largest city in Greece, Athens being the first. Places of interest: the Byzantine churches, the Fortress, The White Tower, The Arch of Galerius, etc. Thessaloniki Airport is at present quite popular for the direct and cheap connecting flights between Europe and the rest of the world. Rila Monastery

About 120 km from Sofia. The most visited Bulgarian monastery. Exquisite architecture and picturesque landscape. It was proclaimed a national historic monument in 1976 and recorded in the UNESCO book on world heritage in 1983.

 

Koprivshtitsa

Only100 km from Sofia. One of the towns of the greatest significance for the Bulgarian national revival period. Preserved old houses exhibiting the typical and memorable architectural style; local cuisine and pleasant hotels.

 

Melnik

180 km south of Sofia. The smallest town in Bulgaria is famous for its wine tourism.Pleasant local “mehanas” where you can taste heavy wine and local dishes. We suggest you put up in a typical Melnik house with rooms for rent, or in a cozy hotel, built entirely in the characteristic for the region architectural style.

 

Veliko Turnovo

The Medieval capital of Bulgaria. It is situated 250 km away from Sofia.The town is famous for its peculiar dislocated terraced houses erected upon the steep hills, The Tsarevets Fortress and the visual show “Sound and Light”- an event you should by no means miss. The cultural and historical preserve Arbanasi is located nearby – a place where one can rest and stroll past ancient houses along narrow cobble stone streets.

Dospat

The biggest alpine dam in the country. A favorite spot for lovers of trout fishing. You can spend the night at one of the most attractive hotels in town and try fresh trout in the local restaurants.

 

Etara

Kazanlak –Shipka – Etara – Gabrovo. An amazing trip, which leaves you with the feeling you have already explored most of the country. The Etara Ethnographic Complex is situated 220 km away from Sofia and allows you to acquaint yourself with the traditional Bulgarian handicrafts,surrounded by picturesque landscape and entertained by the murmur off lowing water. Varna and Euxinograd

The marine capital of Bulgaria is situated 500 km away from Sofia. This large and modern city offers all kinds of entertainment – discos, bars, casinos, but also the only dolphinarium on the Balkan Peninsula. The Royal Palace of “Euxinograd” is well-known for its cellar and its exquisite “Euxignac” brandy. You can buy a bottle on the spot!


Bulgarian traditions and customs
